Wilmington Falcon Fledge Watch Volunteers

The Wilmington Falcon Fledge Watch relies on community scientist volunteers who dedicate time each year to monitor young Peregrine falcons leaving their nest site – a nest box on the 19th floor of the Brandywine Building in Wilmington.

This page provides information on the volunteer program and a form to register to join the effort.

Monitoring occurs generally for about one week each year, based on if and when a nesting pair of Peregrines successfully fledges chicks.

If you are interested in volunteering (training is provided), please fill out the volunteer information form below.

Requirements

Participants must be at least 18 years of age (or accompanied by an adult) to volunteer with the Wilmington Falcon Fledge Watch.

Falcon monitors must be reliable and knowledgeable. They must be able to identify Peregrine Falcons and other bird species found around the area.

Mostly, falcon fledge watch volunteers are invaluable – biologists couldn’t do their jobs without them.

Commitment

Volunteers should plan on committing at least two hours at a time when available to monitor the nest site. There are no requirements for how many days they must attend, but it is highly encouraged to attend multiple days and times.

All volunteers are required to fill out the form below.

The DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife hosts in-person volunteer training each year, based on when fledglings are likely to appear. This form serves as registration for that training.
