The Delaware Ocean and Bay Activity Guide is one of three core components of the Delaware Ocean and Bay Plan. It serves as an inventory of the marine activities and resource types occurring off Delaware’s coast.
Insights into marine activities and current uses, in both a spatial and temporal context, were provided at the request of DNREC’s Coastal Programs by University of Delaware’s Dr. James Rising, in a report titled Ocean and Bay Plan Information Gaps Project: Baseline characterization of uses and resources.
Standardized snapshots of information for each marine activity and resource group, adapted from Dr. Rising’s research, are shared in this Activity Guide, including a description of the activity or resource, its current status, spatial extent and temporal pattern.
Planning for a vibrant blue economy includes consideration of Recreation and Tourism, Maritime Activities and Offshore Energy.
Planning for a healthy blue environment includes consideration of Marine Resource Conservation, Natural Resources and Water Quality.
Planning for a sustainable blue foundation includes consideration of Submarine Infrastructure and Marine Minerals.
Activities and resources were described if they occur within the Ocean and Bay Plan Planning Area, which covers the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic ocean, extending east from Delaware’s coast and past the continental shelf and slope.
Snapshots are reviewed and updated every six months or as new information is identified.
Information and data were derived from a wide range of sources, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private providers and academic sources. Sources are linked to, or noted, as appropriate.
