In some cases, where site constraints limit the ability to install conventional wastewater treatment systems, the Department may approve innovative or alternative systems. These are alternative technologies that have been proven to provide at least an equivalent level of treatment as the conventional systems used in Delaware.
These systems provide advanced treatment for the reduction of nitrogen and are part of the Chesapeake Watershed Implementation Plan and Pollution Control Strategies for the Inland Bays.
The Department reviews and approves specific alternative technologies that may be applied for for use in place of conventional systems. The Department tracks the use and results of the use of such systems as part of its ongoing effort to determine the best technologies to use to protect the environment and human health in Delaware.
“Innovative/Alternative treatment and disposal system” means a wastewater treatment and/or disposal system not specified in these regulations which has been proven to provide at least an equivalent level of treatment as the conventional systems as defined in these regulations. Also referred to as alternative technologies.
