Build a boat from recycled cardboard and see if you can paddle it to the finish line.

A crowd of people, young and old, at a boat ramp with homemade cardboard boats. The Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta is open to anyone willing to build a boat from recycled cardboard and paddle it approximately 200 yards through a short course to the finish line. Boats may be any size, shape or design, but must be made of recycled corrugated cardboard painted with latex paint.

An event for the whole family, the Regatta is presented by the Town of Blades in conjunction with DNREC’s Reclaim Our River Program, the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance, the Delaware Nature Society’s Abbott’s Mill Nature Center, Gallery 107 and the Nanticoke River Yacht Club. There will be music and refreshments.

Awards will be given for winners of races in five categories: individual, youth (12 and under), teens (13 to 18), family/friends, and organizations or businesses. Special awards will be given for “Pride of the Fleet,” “Most Whimsical Boat,” and “Team Spirit.” Spectators will pick a “People’s Choice” award winner. A special “Titanic Award” will be given for the “Most Dramatic Sinking.”

Registration is required and will be $30 per entry. Register by July 17 for special early-bird pricing of $20 per boat. Registration will be available online and on the day of the event.

Sign-in and registration on race day will begin at 11 a.m., with judging of boats’ appearances at noon, and races starting at 12:30 p.m.
