The kestrel monitoring program relies on community scientist volunteers who dedicate time from March through July each year to help monitor kestrel boxes across the state. This page provides information on the volunteer program and a form to register to join the effort.

Kestrel monitors must be reliable and knowledgeable. Volunteers commit to monitoring nest boxes every two weeks during the breeding season. They must be able to identify American kestrels and other bird species found in and around nest boxes.
Mostly, kestrel monitoring volunteers are invaluable – biologists couldn’t do their jobs without them.
If you are interested in volunteering (training is provided), please fill out the volunteer information form below.
All volunteers must certify that they are fully COVID-19 vaccinated or request an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccination(s) due to qualified ADA or sincerely held religious beliefs or practices.
Volunteers will follow all Delaware Division of Public Health and CDC guidance. Masks may be required based on guidance during the seasons.
Participants must be at least 18 years of age (or accompanied by an adult) to volunteer with the Delaware Kestrel Partnership.
Volunteers should plan on committing at least a half an hour (plus drive time and time to submit data) every 10 to 14 days from March through the beginning of July. A pre-season meeting and training is held each year in February.
